For community members, there too is not just one way to help. Here are some recommendations we have for community members who would like to help in other ways:

For community members, there too is not just one way to help. Here are some recommendations we have for community members who would like to help in other ways: 

One way to help community members is to do so directly, if you feel safe doing so. Statistically, most people stay in the neighborhood where they once lived. These are your neighbors and you can assist them like any other neighbor. Some suggestions: 

  • If you feel safe doing so, approach a person experiencing homelessness, introduce yourself, and ask if they need assistance. You can direct them to 211colorado.org which lists various resources by distance from your location. Many individuals will tell you they are already utilizing the resources they are eligible for, but they may be on an 18-24 month waiting list for housing, waiting for a doctors’ appointment, etc. If you are able to, consider directly assisting them.  
  • If you see someone camping outside, and want them to move, consider a few things: Is this person a danger to themselves or others? Are they doing something that you would call the police on for a housed person? For instance, do you normally call the police if a person is sitting in a park, smoking marijuana, drinking a beer, etc.? If not, consider learning more about why criminalization is an ineffective strategy to resolve homelessness (link) 
  • If you see someone who appears to need assistance due to an illness or injury, ask if they would like help and wait for a response. If the person is unresponsive or otherwise requires immediate medical assistance, dial 911, and wait with them until help arrives. Carrying Narcan and following this how-to guide is an option if you think there may be an overdose. 
  • If someone is having a mental health incident and you are in Denver, STAR is a wonderful resource. Learn more here. In other jurisdiction, ask that the police send a trained mental health professional, sometimes called a “co-responder”, to come alongside police officers to assist. 
  • If you see a person threatening or endangering others, what is the best action to take?  If you feel safe doing so, saying something may help deescalate the situation. If you feel unsafe, do not attempt to intervene yourself. Call 911.
