CAPITOL HILL UNITED NEIGHBORS (CHUN) HONORS COLORADO COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS
DURING ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER
JOHN PARVENSKY, PRESIDENT OF THE COLORADO COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS, ACCEPTS AWARD FOR HIS ORGANIZATION’S WORK TO DEVELOP AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
DENVER (January 6, 2011) — A prominent neighborhood organization honored the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless for its work to end homelessness and develop more affordable housing in Capitol Hill and other neighborhoods around the metro area. The Coalition’s president, John Parvensky, accepted a Good Neighbor award from the Capitol Hill United Neighbors Association (CHUN) at the organization’s annual meeting at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral.
In December, the Coalition opened its16th affordable housing development; Renaissance Uptown Lofts. It is located at the corner of Pearl Street and Colfax Ave, in the heart of Capitol Hill. Half of the 98 units are reserved for formerly homeless individuals, including clients of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, while the other half target households earning between 30% to 60% of the Area Median Income ($10,000 to $35,000).
“You and your organization have been pioneers in creating affordable housing and services to the homeless that sensitively integrate into and compliment the communities they are located in,” said Roger Armstrong, Executive Director of CHUN.
The Coalition worked closely with local, state and federal stakeholders as well as private investors during the planning and construction of the development. The building’s exterior features a 1920s era design to foster a shared sense of history among the newer and long-time residents. Ground level retail space will also bring several new businesses to the development, creating employment opportunities for Coalition clients.
There are an estimated 11,000 homeless people on any given night in the seven-county Denver metro area. The mission of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless is to work collaboratively toward the prevention of homelessness and the creation of lasting solutions for homeless and at-risk families, children, and individuals throughout Colorado. CCH advocates for and provides a continuum of housing and a variety of services to improve the health, well-being and stability of those it serves. Please visit us at www.coloradocoalition.org.
