His tools were stolen and in an instant, he lost his ability to make a living.
Donald Cox was staying in a shelter with no where to live. Don was a mechanic by trade, until his tools were stolen. In an instant, he lost his ability to make a living. In search of a new source of income, he spent each day at the public library combing the Internet for work. However, he was unsuccessful without a permanent address. Even the local day labor employers would not accept the shelter’s address. Don came to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless seeking help and was introduced to our Renaissance Works Program. Through the program, Don has been trained in construction and employed to build the apartment building he will eventually call home. Don has been working at our Renaissance Uptown Lofts construction site since the groundbreaking in November 2009, and he plans to move into the new building upon completion in December of 2010. In the meantime, Don is accessing our health care and case management services, and receiving some much needed dental care. The Renaissance Works Program has provided Don with valuable and transferable skills in construction, as well as a steady income and a place to live. And that means he can get back to his favorite hobby of singing Elvis tunes!
