NEW RESEARCH EXAMINES GROWING HOUSING PROBLEMS FACING RENTERS

NLIHC.org, October 2011 - A new series of research briefs from the National Low Income Housing Coalition highlight a variety of housing issues, including the growing hardships for renters, many of whom are at-risk for homelessness.

DENVER MAY PURSUE LAW CRACKING DOWN ON HOMELESS ON 16TH STREET MALL

DenverPost.com - Jeremy Meyer, October 20 - John Parvensky, president of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, called the effort to beef up laws "a real step backward" for the city, which has been working to end homelessness through its Road Home program.

RISE IN HOMELESSNESS EXPECTED

HousingFinance.com - Donna Kimura, October 31 - Homelessness in the nation could increase by 5 percent, or 74,000 people, in the next three years without additional intervention, estimates the Homelessness Research Institute at the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

A FOOLISH TIME TO CUT HOUSING AID
NYTimes.com, October 25 - With record numbers of families teetering on the verge of homelessness, Congress should be shoring up the precious few federal programs that provide affordable housing for the poor, the elderly and the disabled.

VETERANS MORE LIKELY TO BE HOMELESS, STUDY SAYS
HUD.gov, October 2011 - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) published the second annual supplemental report which analyzes the extent and nature of homelessness among American veterans. According to the report, approximately 76,329 veterans were homeless on a single night in January 2010 while 144,842 veterans spent at least one night in a shelter during that year.

MORE WOMEN FALLING INTO RANKS OF HOMELESS VETERANS
LATimes.com - David Zucchino, October 23 - Women make up a growing number of homeless veterans, a group usually associated with combat-hardened men unable to cope with civilian life. Homelessness among female veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has increased every year for the past six years - from 150 in 2006 to 1,700 this year - according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

NEW GUIDANCE ON INTEGRATED STRATEGY FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH
HomelessChildrenAmerica.org, October 31 - A joint brief by the Campaign to End Child Homelessness at the National Center on Family Homelessness, National Collaboration for Youth, National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty , and National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth offers policy recommendations for improving federal collaboration for homeless children and youth.

CITY TO ASSIST HOMELESS TEENS
WSJ.com - Tamer El-Ghobashy, October 21 - New York City has agreed to a series of foster care overhauls after two years of negotiations with attorneys who accused it of allowing teenagers to fall into homelessness after leaving the system at age 18.
